In the early 1970's skateboarding took off. The small grungy town of Venice California, otherwise known as "dogtown" was where it started. Kids with "hand me down" Boards with clay wheels and rusted barrings started to carve the streets through traffic lights and bombing hills. Surf style skating was born. The surf wasn't always good enough for these Surf/skate rats, so they hit the streets.Jim Muir, the creator and founder of Dogtown Skate co., was one of these kids.
these young men became the Zephyer skate and surf team, Traveling to competitions in and then out of state. This spread the idea and likeness, changing the VIEW of skateboarding to the public eye.
Jayboy Adams was one of the first "Z-boys" who started a new idea, When he accidentally when off the top of a ramp and fell on public television.
This created the idea of ramping for air, or Vertical skating. Jayboy was an original skater who was said to be "the spark that ignited the flame". Along with his close Friends Tony alva, who was the first to win an international competition. Stacy peralta, who NOW owns peralta skate co. and created Tony hawk.
by the early 1970's this "flame" had California and soon, the country.
